My kiddies are back at school and I am back into it! It is so hard to be productive when they are home that is for sure. I'm definitely glad to hear the word mum a lot less this week! Something I have been thinking about recently is what everyone's perception is of the word luxury. The other day I was talking to someone (they were inquiring about my property styling services) and I said that I could "lux it up" and the response was no they didn't want it to be lux. I suppose the first thing people associate with luxury is expensive. Or maybe it's a lot of marble, brass, velvet and fur.
For me luxury is a vibe that a well design space can have. Whether it be a modern interior, bohemian, minimal, country, industrial etc. any design style can be luxurious and without a massive budget. I guess for me it is the extra layer, the cherry on top. Here is a few do's and don'ts to create luxury in any interior style.
Don't - Buy matching furniture sets!
Even though it is tempting and quick and easy to go to Amart or Early Settler etc. and buy a bed with matching bedside tables and matching chest of draws it is a quick way to not only kill luxury but also doesn't help to bring your personality into the space creating a display home vibe.
Do - Mix it up!
Stay within the same style if you are not wanting an eclectic interior but choose a different colour, finish, design. Even better buy pieces of furniture from different stores. It is simple I know but it will make a huge difference to adding that extra layer and warmth to your home! Extra layer + warmth = LUX
Don't - Use Poly Fill cushion inserts!
They are flat, lose their shape and look sad and limp. Definitely not lux.
Do- Use Down Feather inserts.
An inexpensive way to make affordable cushions look lux. Juicy + Plump = LUX
Don't - Impulse buy cheap accessories!
You walk into Kmart and it's all so alluring....... Affordable vases, candles, artificial plants and artwork all at your finger tips. Before you know it your trolley is full and you don't even feel guilt when you tap your card on the pay pass screen. Your practically saving money! But the reality is a few months later your over it, Kmart has a whole new range out and those accessories aren't looking so shiny.
Do - Take time, reflect and support small business.
Don't get me wrong I love a cheap thrill but I have learnt especially with accessories it makes such a huge difference to your home when you take the time when purchasing and think about do I truely love this, can I use it, is it well made? Support local businesses and or buy Australian made pieces that might cost more but will have more longevity. Not only will your home have more personality and be more luxurious it will cut down on waste so be better for the environment. Take time + Well loved = LUX
